Wōden (National Museum of Denmark)
God of the hunt, worshiped during the Migration Period (c.300-700 CE) by Germanic peoples.
Woden was the Germanic equivalent of the Roman god Mercury. Like Mercury, the middle day of the week is dedicated to him - Wēdnes dæg (“Woden’s Day”). This has since evolved into the modern English “Wednesday,” much like Mercury’s hand in the Romantic words Mercredi (French), Mercoledi (Italian), Miercoles (Spanish).
